North Wales Parrot Rescue is a registered charity which was founded by Joan and Mani Rakhra in May 2013.

Due to the success and to keep the familiarity it was renamed on 1st September 2015 to Joan's North Wales Parrot Rescue.

We are a self-funded rescue and do our own fundraising in and around the North Wales area. We rely on, and are very grateful to receive donations and offer the opportunity to sponsor our permanent resident birds.

We help support people with  behavioural problems, take in birds when their owners can no longer keep them , match them to the right person and home that can commit to them and give them a second chance in life.

Our ethos is to educate about the care and welfare of these fabulous creatures.

We provide this information and support through our store, displays, school visits and social media, as well as our guest talks in and around the local community.

We have taken part for a program for Channel 5 highlighting the Rescue and the work that we do.

You can watch it on catch up TV on MY5 just search: My Houseful of Animals & click on episode 2.

We would like to say a big thank you to all those that helped the rescue with materials and food supplies.

Jays Fresh milk for all the support with the fresh fruit & veg donated to the rescue.

Snowdonia Timber Products for all the timber supplies which have gone into all the toy making for all the birds at the rescue helping to keep the beaks busy and minds stimulated.

We would like to say a huge thank you to all the continues support from our donors, safehouses, long terms fosterers, staff & volunteers.

And all the volunteers here and at the charity shop in Colwyn Bay without all of your support from local people and businesses the rescue would not be possible to maintain the progress through the last couple of years.

Also a huge thankyou and shout out goes out to Birch heath veterinary clinic, Tarporley. They are absolutely fantastic. They are always at the end of the phone & email when ever we need them, they will squeeze us in at the drop of a hat when we are worried about our birds. If you are looking for an avian vet then we highly recommend them.

Our charity shop in Colwyn Bay

We have opened a fundraising charity shop (THE ONLY PARROT RESCUE CHARITY SHOP IN THE UK) on Greenfield Road in Colwyn Bay situated 150 yards from junction 21 on the A55 by the Morrisons roundabout where we sell Clothing, Bric a Brac, Electricals as well as Parrot Food & toys. We have received great response from the public and support from volunteers but we always need more help. If you can donate some of your unwanted household items we can accept them here or arrange a collection, also if you have time to give we would love to welcome you as a volunteer at the shop or at the rescue centre.

A letter from Joan

I am writing as the Founder of North Wales Parrot Rescue with an insight as to the work that our registered charity carries out, our ethos is to educate and support. We support you through what is such a difficult time when it comes to rehoming your much loved pet.

Parrots can make excellent family additions, and it would not be till one is owned, that it soon becomes clear how much time and education that is involved with owning one of these fabulous birds. As a new parrot owner would soon discover how very limited support, with the care and advice of these species is available to them out there. During the last several years it has become very noticeable how so many people took on the responsibility of parrot ownership, but yet once they realised they were out of their depth there was no one to turn to for support or help with rehoming these specialised birds. Through my personal experience working with the birds and voluntary work carried out 0ver the years, it highlighted to me the need for a rescue in the North Wales Area and this is where North Wales Parrot Rescue was born.

Founded in May 2013 by Joan & Mani Rakhra, Which was changed to Joan's North Wales Parrot Rescue in September 2015, to keep the familiarity of myself to the rescue. We are the only Parrot Rescue in North Wales and are based in Llandudno, and have the facilities to cater from the smallest to the largest members of the bird family. I have personally owned a variety of parrots and have had over 30 years’ handling and working experience with the birds. We are a registered charity and our funding comes mainly  from fundraising events, educational talks, and sales at our charity shop based in Colwyn Bay. We are further supported by a team of volunteers who give their time to help us at events, with in the rescue and at our shop. They really are amazing people and they can offer a lot of support we are like a family and all have the bird care in our hearts and want to help and do the best for them. We are always looking for creative ways to help and educate people about the care needs and requirements of these birds and carry this out through social media, demonstrations and talks. We have recently started to educate children about parrot care in local infant and primary schools and do educational talks for youth clubs. If this is something your Club, Function or School would be interested in (North Wales Area Only) then please do not hesitate to contact us.
